Abstract

Objective: To investigate the hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic effects of an ethanolic extract of the leaves of Ficus racemosa in both normal and alloxan induced diabetes in rats. Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from the retro-orbital plexus under light ether anesthesia before and at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 h after the oral administration of 100, 200, and 300/kg doses. Blood glucose was analyzed by glucose-oxidase method using a visible spectrophotometer. Results: Graded doses of the alcoholic extract when given to both normal and diabetic rats produce significant reductions in blood glucose at the 6 h after ethanolic extract administration (P < 0.001). The effect was found to be dose dependent with all treatments at the doses administered. Conclusion: The present study clearly indicated a significant antidiabetic activity of the leaves of Ficus racemosa and supports the traditional usage of fruits by the Ayurvedic physicians for the control of diabetes.

Abstract

A new Rabi sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] variety Phule Anuradha identified as drought tolerant because of its superior physiological traits under receding soil moisture condition during Rabi season on shallow soil type of Maharashtra. An experiment was conducted to screen sixteen genotypes for drought tolerance under receding soil moisture condition duringRabi season on shallow type of soil. The grain yield was positively correlated with photosynthesis rate, stomatal resistance, photo-synthetically active radiation, relative water content of leaves (RLWC), leaf area index (LAI), biomass at harvest, grain number per panicle, test weight, ear head exertion, stay green at physiological maturity, per day production of grain with fodder and fodder yield and negatively correlated with leaf temperature difference (^oC) , chlorophyll stability index (CSI), stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and stomata frequency under drought stress. Grain yield decreased in all the genotypes as the crop was subjected to progressive drought stress under receding soil moisture situation. Among the genotypes studied Phule Anuradha performed well under drought stress conditions maintaining leaf area, leaf relative water content, biomass at harvest, test weight, ear head exertion(%), leaf temperature, chlorophyll stability index and stomatal frequency.

Abstract

The Parkinson's disease is mainly distinguished from other diseases based on the key feature that is tremors. Oxotremorine induced oxidative stress is implicated as a common pathway in development of Parkinson's symptoms like, tremor, salivation and temperature variation. Hence Oxotremorine-induced tremor model was used to evaluate antiparkinsonian drugs. Different extracts of plant of Cassia tora such as, petroleum ether (200mg/kg) p.o., methanolic (200mg/kg) p.o. and ethyl acetate extract (200mg/Kg) p.o. were used to investigate antiparkinsonian effect on oxotremorine induced Parkinson's symptoms in mice. Procyclidine, an anticholinergic, antiparkinsonian drug was administered as a standard drug at a dose of 5mg/kg p.o., 1hr prior the administration of oxotremorine (0.5mg/kg) S.C. Methanolic extract at 200mg/kg p.o route of administration decreased (p<0.05) Parkinson's symptoms, while petroleum ether extract (200mg/kg)p.o and ethyl acetate extract (200mg/kg)p.o shows moderate action. This study suggests that cassia tora is a plant with possible therapeutic value for Parkinson's disease.

Abstract

In present study Acorus calamus and Argyreia speciosa were collected, their authentications were performed. These two plants were extracted by three different solvents. Extracts of these plants were subjected to different phytochemical analysis. Acute toxicity studies of these plant extracts were performed to determine their safety. Phytochemical Investigation were carried out by performing various tests viz. test for detection of carbohydrate, alkaloid, proteins, volatile oils, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, resins, tannins, amino acid, steroids, triterpenoids, anthraquinones and coumarines. Acute oral toxicity was performed using OECD 420 guidelines. Groups of female rats are dosed in a stepwise procedure using the fixed doses of 5, 50, 300 and 2000 mg/kg. No toxic symptoms or mortality were observed in any animals, which lived up to 14 days after the administration of all extract of AC and AS upto the level of 2000 mg/kg body weight.

Abstract

Arogyavardhini, an Ayurvedic herbomineral formulation, was studied for its effect in experimental prostatic hyperplasia induced by testosterone injection s.c for 21 days in rats and inflammation induced in rat hind paw by carrageenan injection s.c. The results showed that Arogyavardhini at dosage of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg orally for 21 days showed significant reduction of prostatic hyperplasia as indicated by decreased prostate weight and volume and hispathological observations. It also significantly inhibited carrageenan induced hind paw oedema in dose dependant manner. These results suggest that Arogyavardhini is effective in prostate disorder like Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) by inhibiting proliferative and inflammatory mechanisms in prostate.

Abstract

A series of N’-[3-(aryl/alkyl substituted)-4-oxo-1, 3-thiazolidin-2-ylidene]-2-(pyridine-2-yloxy) acetohydrazides were synthesized using appropriate synthetic route. These compounds were synthesized by their analytical and spectral data. All the newly synthesized compounds were examined for their antidiabetic activity using GOD-POD method on Wistar strain rats. The acute toxicity study (LD50) values of these compounds were determined. The test compounds showed significant antidiabetic activity on evaluation.

Abstract

Introduction – Suspicious death in married female is always a sensitive case and needs our full attention. So, current study was undertaken at S.S.G. Hospital, Vadodara for a period of 1 year. Material & Method –Of all cases coming for the postmortem examination, cases in which the victim is female and below 30 years of age were taken for the study when there was suspicion regarding the cause of death. Results – Out of all the medico-legal autopsies 5.7 % autopsies were Unnatural deaths of married females less than 30 years old. Maximum number (40 %) of deaths were observed in the age group of 21-25 years. (86.65 %) of female deaths occurred within 0-7 years of marriage. 75.55 % of deaths were suicidal in nature followed by accidental (18.88 %). Statistical Analysis –The data collected was analyzed using MS Excel worksheets for averages and percentage. Conclusion – Many of the findings of current study were correlated with earlier studies, while others were found contradictory. Further detailed study with larger sample size is required.

Abstract

Introduction – Female deaths, especially young married females always arouse suspicions, but later age females who have crossed 30 years of age are not the cases which draws our attention. So, we conducted an observational study for a period of 1 year in autopsy of SSG Hospital, Baroda. Material & Method – Of all cases coming for the postmortem examination, cases in which the victim is married female and above 30 years of age were taken for the study when there was suspicion regarding the cause of death. Results – Victims having Illiterates (16.66 %), primary (45.83 %), secondary (33.33 %) school education were total 95.82 % of cases. It was observed that 72.91 % of deaths were suicidal in nature followed by accidental (22.91 %) and homicidal deaths (4.16 %). Statistical analysis –The data collected was analyzed using MS Excel worksheets for averages and percentage. Conclusion – Education holds a very pivotal role in the prevention of unnatural deaths in females.
